RABZ on d’ Road: Why We Are Running Against Youth Violence This April

Trinidad and Tobago stands at a crossroads. While our culture is defined by vibrancy, creativity, and resilience, our communities are increasingly overshadowed by a cycle of crime and gang affiliation that targets our most vulnerable resource: our youth. At RABZ Fight Promotions, we believe that silence is not an option. On April 11th, we are stepping out of the ring and onto the road for the RABZ On d’ Road 5K, a run dedicated to raising awareness and providing solutions to the epidemic of youth violence in our nation.

A Nation in Search of Peace

It is no secret that Trinidad and Tobago currently faces some of the highest crime rates in the world. According to the 2024 Homicide Round-Up by InSight Crime, our nation reached a historic and devastating peak last year with 625 murders, a homicide rate of approximately 45.7 per 100,000 people.

Even more sobering is the official data from the Ministry of National Security, which confirms that approximately 43% of these killings are directly linked to gang-related activity. (“Why Is Trinidad and Tobago Facing a Surge in Crime? – Inter-American Dialogue”)

For many young men and women in our local communities, the lack of a structured environment leads them toward the false “validation” offered by gang culture. Without a healthy outlet for their energy and emotions, the result is often tragic a cycle of gun violence and lost potential that tears families apart.

The Run Against Youth Violence isn’t just a race; it is a public stand. We are running to acknowledge the pain our communities have felt and to signal a shift toward a more hopeful future. This event, held in partnership with Power Pair Production Ltd., serves as a call to action for every parent, athlete, and citizen who believes our youth deserve better than the streets.

Controlled Expression: The Power of Combat Sports

Many people ask why a kickboxing and combat sports promotion is leading a peace run. The answer lies in the heart of what we do every day at RABZ. Martial arts is not about teaching people how to fight; it is about teaching them how to not fight outside the ring.

Combat sports provide a “controlled emotional expression”, a psychological and physical release that is the direct opposite of the chaotic, anarchic violence found in gang life. Through the discipline of the ring, a young person learns:

  • Emotional Regulation: Managing anger and adrenaline under pressure.
  • Discipline: Understanding that success requires consistency and sacrifice.
  • Community: Finding a sense of belonging in a gym rather than a gang.
  • Validation: Earning respect through hard work and merit, not through fear.

By directing the energy of our youth into sports managed by community leaders, the sport provides a healthy avenue for them to find their identity. RABZ Fight Promotions is committed to being more than just an event organizer; we are a pathway for national development and sports tourism, showing the world that Trinidad and the Caribbean is a hub for elite, disciplined athletes.

Running for the Next Generation

On April 11th, we invite local families, runners, and fitness enthusiasts to join us. Whether you are a professional athlete or a casual walker, your presence matters. Every step taken on the course is a message to the youth of Trinidad and Tobago: You are seen, you are valued, and there is a better way.

A representative from the RABZ team will give a brief address during the event to further elaborate on our mission and how we can collectively steer our country toward a safer, more disciplined future. This is about more than fitness, it is about the soul of our nation.
